Saturday, June 12th my grandson and I headed down to the to the Southwest Environmental Center’s 13th annual Raft the Rio event. I’ve heard about this Las Cruces, NM event in the past, but I’ve never had the opportunity to attend. It turns out Raft the Rio not only raises awareness for a great cause, but it’s also a really fun event for participants and spectators alike.
Raft the Rio is an annual “race” and festival hosted by the Southwest Environmental Center designed to celebrate the Rio Grande River. Participants can use a premade raft or vessel, but are are encourage to get creative and build a raft out of discarded or recycled materials.
The starting point for the race is located at Llorona Park, which is located just a few minutes from Picacho Mountain Master Planned Community. From there rafters travel a three mile stretch of the Rio Grande and finish up with prizes, refreshments, food, and live music.
It was absolutely incredible to see the creativity that many or the participants used in designing and decorating their rafts. Our friends from Sunspot Solar Energy Systems were even there with a homemade raft! My two-year-old grandson was completely mesmerized.
Raft the Rio was a great Las Cruces, NM event and something that we will definitely attend in the future!
