Green Building: Make mine a mini… Ductless air systems deliver, don’t leak

miles dyson inspection connectionThe following is a guest post by our good friend Miles Dyson of Inspection Connection.  Miles is Las Cruces, New Mexico’s foremost expert in home inspection, energy rating, and green certification.

A key obstacle in the design of any comfortable and efficient home is how to cost-effectively heat and cool the interior.

Traditionally, we solve this problem by in stalling a centrally located heating and cooling air handler system, which delivers conditioned air via ductwork and large blower fans to each room. As residential building science has evolved and provided tools to measure and accurately predict heating- and cooling-efficiency losses, we see this traditional system can cause as many problems as it solves. Las Cruces, New Mexico Convention Center set to open to the public in January 2011

Las Cruces Convention CenterSomething big is coming to the small town of Las Cruces, New Mexico.  For years, Las Cruces has been lacking a large capacity meeting facility.  Our current facilities such as Dickerson’s Event Center and the New Mexico Farm and Ranch Museum have unique character.  They have served Las Cruces well, but many city-wide events have outgrown their capacity.  That is why we are so excited about the January 2011 grand opening of the Las Cruces Convention Center.

I recently did a short Q&A with the Las Cruces Convention Center General Manager, David Hicks.  I’d like to share a little of what he had to say about the new facility. Continue reading

Green Building: First time home buyer tax credits have expired but energy efficient tax credits can still save you money

I wanted to share this article from The Las Cruces Bulletin’s Neighbor to Neighbor section.  While first time home buyer tax credits have expired in Las Cruces, New Mexico and across the country, there are still valuable tax credits available for green home improvements.

Solar energy has become more affordable, and visually appealing than ever before. If you're not ready to go solar there are many other ways to take advantage of tax credits and make your home more energy efficient!

Thanks to Uncle Sam and some temporary tax credits, it pays right now to go green.

The Residential Energy Property Credit increases the energy tax credit for homeowners who make certain energy-efficient improvements to their existing homes, in many cases giving the homeowner a credit of up to 30 percent of the cost of the project. Continue reading

Spaceport America: Space commercialization is a boon to New Mexico

Spaceport America director Rick Homans

Guest Post by Spaceport America executive director Rick Homans

I’d like to thank Rick Homans of the New Mexico Spaceport Authority for this guest post, originally published in the Las Cruces Bulletin.

There is a major battle taking place in Congress over the future of the nation’s space program, and the respective roles of NASA and the commercial spaceflight industry. New Mexico, and members of its Congressional delegation, are right in the center of the arena.

President Obama recently proposed that NASA shift its emphasis to deep space exploration, and rely on the private sector to handle the missions closer to Earth into sub-orbit and to the space station. Continue reading
